Honoring Oscar Urteaga: A Life Lived with Joy and Love By Chris Urteaga

It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of Oscar Urteaga’s passing. After a courageous two-month battle with stomach cancer, Oscar left us on Sunday, June 8th, at 4:30 AM, following complications from an emergency surgery. His spirit, which brought so much light and joy to countless lives, is now at peace.

In late March, Oscar received the life-altering diagnosis of stomach cancer. Immediately, he faced this challenge head-on, seeking every possible avenue for survival. After two months of numerous appointments, extensive tests, and consultations with seven different doctors, the most viable, albeit dangerous, option was a complete stomach removal. His surgery on May 30th initially appeared successful, and he was recovering in the hospital for a week. However, on Saturday, Jun 7th, Oscar experienced sudden pain, leading to an emergency surgery. Despite everyone’s best efforts, complications arose, and we lost our beloved Oscar.

Oscar was truly one of a kind—a charismatic man who loved to make people smile. His life was a testament to connection and warmth, making friends wherever he went. From his early days in Callao, Peru, attending Colegio Militar Leoncio Prado, to his journey to the United States, living in San Francisco, Honolulu, and finally settling in San Diego, CA, Oscar touched many hearts. Working in the hospitality industry throughout his travels, he forged countless meaningful relationships and close friendships.

If you ever had the pleasure of being invited to Oscar’s home, you knew you were in for a treat: lively music, delicious food, and endless fun banter and laughter. Whether it was hosting family and friends for holidays and celebrations or simply sending a quick “good morning” WhatsApp message to check in, Oscar always made sure you felt his care and love. He truly delighted in bringing happiness to those around him.

Oscar is survived by his two loving sons, Oscar Nicholas and Christopher; his mother, Estela Cabrera “Chela”; his sister, Anita; and the love of his life, Laura Gomez. For the past ten years, Oscar dedicated himself as the full-time caregiver for his 97-year-old mother, Chela, managing all her expenses, medical appointments, and medications.

During this incredibly difficult time, we are reaching out for support to help cover Oscar’s funeral and service costs, and to ensure we can find good care for his beloved mother. We understand that times are tough for many, so if you are unable to donate, we simply ask for your thoughts and prayers for Oscar’s family.

Thank you for being a part of Oscar’s life and for any support you can offer.

Te Quiero Mucho Oscar Urteaga!
